Praised by audiences and critics alike, Bruno Cormier, baritone, and Aurélie Cormier, mezzo-soprano, a vocal duo originally from Chéticamp, Nova Scotia, often perform classical concerts comprised of both solo and duet pieces, blending traditional Acadian folk songs with a contemporary classical sound. In 2006, they released their long-awaited first duet recording, Départs - 14 chansons traditionnelles acadiennes, featuring 14 new arrangements by Bruno of their favourite Acadian folk songs.
In 2009, they released Dans le silence de la nuit, a Christmas recording of their favourite carols, arranged by Bruno, and accompanied by chamber orchestra, piano and organ.
I knew that Toronto-based baritone Bruno Cormier is a very fine singer in the operatic genre. A huge Christmas present surprise for me was finding that he is also an accomplished composer. His L'arrivée du Christ is a slightly atonal yet lyrical tradition-based six part song cycle. It is the highlight of the CD Dans le silence de la nuit, a collection of French Christmas songs arranged by Bruno, and performed by him and his sister, mezzo-soprano Aurélie Cormier. This is a very professional and musically moving release. Both singers have the soul and the technique to dazzle, and are accompanied by a tight instrumental ensemble.
